How to Help

Homeless people can be found in practically every city in the world. Some cities have a larger population of homeless people than others. Casey Leins who is a writer for U.S. News wrote an article about the top 5 cities in the United States of America with the highest number of homeless people (this information can be found in the chart to the left). It is no surprise to me that New York has the highest number, however, what does shock me is the stark total of people living without a shelter. These numbers should upset anyone who can comprehend them. Seeing the number can make a person have a very depressing hopeless feeling. They shouldn’t! There are a number of ways, big and small, that people can help and make a difference with the situation of homelessness.

Many people give to homeless people directly when they see them on the street. Cities try to discourage this due to panhandling that can occur. The homeless people then rely on the handouts of people instead of going to the various shelters and organizations around the city for resources. Another issue of panhandling is that you cannot be sure that the person you are giving your money to is actually in need of it. I am not trying to discourage you from giving money to someone in need, but let me tell you of more responsible and beneficial ways to provide help for them.

Donate, Donate, Donate!

You can donate your money directly to the homeless organizations and shelters in your area. They are always needing funds to help not just one person in need, but many that you don't see.

You can donate essential products to shelters and organizations. Things like non-perishable  food items, clothes of any gender or age, personal hygiene items: tooth paste, soap, tooth brush, pads and tampons etc..

You can donate your time. Places that help the homeless are always looking for volunteers to help pass out food and products, or anything else they need someone to do to help.

You can participate or host a fundraiser to earn money for organizations.

Spread awareness about the issue of homelessness by making fliers and cards. Talk about it with your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, anyone who will listen.

Remember to do your research, homeless people are not just people. They are men, women, and children who need our help! Be sure to follow organizations in your area to keep up to date on any and all events they might be having. Share your support for the cause!
